Israel has eight universities and about forty or so colleges. What is the difference between the two?
Well, in Israel only a university can grant a doctorate degree. The colleges mainly teach the first degree, while the universities teach the first and the second degree as well as the doctorate. All of the eight universities are being subsidized by the state.
I bet you didn't know that Israel is ranked 3rd in the world with regards to the percentage of the population that holds an academic degree – 20% of the population! So they must be doing something right with regards higher education...

This prestigious university came up in 60th place among the world’s top universities survey. The university grants bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. The university has three main campuses in Jerusalem and close to 25,000 students, who study a range of subjects such as medicine, engineering, business, education and more.

This is the biggest university in Israel. Bar Ilan University is the second biggest university in Israel. The main campus is located in the city of Ramat Gan, which is east of Tel Aviv. Bar Ilan is unique in that it maintains a Jewish identity and tradition with modern technologies and research.

The University of Haifa is probably the most pluralistic university in Israel. The campus sits on top of the Carmel mountain and offers six Faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences and Science Education, Law, Social Welfare and Health Studies, and Education. It also has five Schools: Business Administration, Social Work, History, Public Health, and Political Sciences.

Ben Gurion University is located in the southern part of Israel in the desert.
