Pita Bread Recipe

Here is an easy pita bread recipe for you to try. The pita is a staple in Israel as you can fill it with hummus, tahini, falafel, salad and a million other tasty options. The pita is best when it is fresh and warm – no surprise there…

Ingredients:

Enough for 10 pieces of pita bread

  • 1kg (2.2 lbs) flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 spoon yeast

  • 2 cups hot water – not boiling.

How to make the pita bread:

  1. Mix together the flour, yeast and salt.

  2. Slowly (but surely) add the water little by little and form into a dough.

  3. Let the dough sit for about 45 minutes, covered in a piece of fabric or a pot’s cover. Leave in a warm place until the dough swells up.

  4. Divide the dough into 10 pieces and form a ball from each one.

  5. Dip each ball in flour and flatten to a circle of about 10-13 cm (4-5 inches) diameter.

  6. Bake in 180º Celsius (350º Fahrenheit) until you get a brownish color. If you bake it in an electric oven make sure you turn the pitas around from time to time so both sides will be equally brownish.
