The Sea of Galilee, or the Kineret as it is called in Hebrew, is a good size fresh water lake. Actually it is the biggest reservoir of drinking water in Israel. At 200 meters (685 feet) under sea level it is the lowest freshwater lake on our planet.
The lake has played a major role in the life of Jesus and has
become quite an attraction for Christian pilgrimage. Per the Christian
tradition, Jesus performed some of his miracles, like walking on the
water, in or around the lake.
The Kineret and Tiberias, the city
right next to the lake, are also of importance to Jewish people. After
the Jewish revolt against the Romans (135 CE), the Jews were prohibited
from entering Jerusalem. Due to that reason the center of Jewish life
moved to the Kineret area, and specifically to Tiberias.
Now that I have covered the historical background, lets move on to the fun stuff…
The sea of Galilee has many great beaches!!!
You would probably greatly enjoy Guy Beach and Tsemakh Beach, but there are other more secluded beaches such as the Ein Gev beach. You can swim, water ski, jet ski, go to the water parks on the shoreline or participate in a host of other activities.
There are also plenty of
hotels and inns
around the lake and in the nearby kibbutzim. And the fish and other restaurants are everywhere.
So... take your time and have fun.
